Console refresh

For an Xbox or other console that runs hot, gets loud or shuts off. Opened up, cleaned out, new thermal paste, closed back up and tested.

What's included

  • Console opened up
  • Dust cleaned out of the fan, vents and heatsink
  • Old thermal paste replaced with fresh paste, or a PTM7950 pad
  • Closed back up and tested

Good for

  • A console that sounds like a jet engine
  • One that shuts off by itself while you play
  • Older consoles that were never opened

Console won't turn on?

If your console worked one day and won't start the next, the power supply is usually the cause, and it's an easy fix. Eric opens it up and tests the power supply. If that's the problem, he gets the new part and puts it all back together.

The $100 is for the labour: opening the console, testing the power supply and putting it back together. The new power supply is paid separately, on top of the $100. If it turns out not to be the power supply and it can't be fixed, the $100 still applies for the check.

Apart from the power supply fix, this is a clean and refresh, not a repair. Eric doesn't do board repairs.

A PS5 uses liquid metal from the factory, so a PS5 refresh is a liquid metal redo. It takes more care, and it's priced separately.

Thermal options

The material between the chip and the cooler decides how cool it runs and for how long. Eric can use:

Quality thermal paste

Included

A fresh, good-quality paste. The right choice for most PCs and consoles.

PTM7950 phase-change pad

Eric's pick, extra cost

A pad that melts into place the first time it heats up. It doesn't dry out or pump out, so it keeps working for years. Eric runs it on almost all of his own CPUs and graphics cards.

Usually adds about $50 to the job. Bigger chips cost more, so it's priced case by case.

Liquid metal

Only where it's safe

The best heat transfer, but it conducts electricity and can't touch some metals. Eric tells you if your device can take it. Quoted per job.
